Safaricom Job in Kenya


We are pleased to announce the following vacancy in the Legal and Secretarial Services Department within Corporate Affairs Division. 

In keeping with our current business needs, we are looking for a person who meets the criteria indicated below:

Principal In-House Counsel – Technology

Ref: CA_PICT_ Sept 2012

Reporting to the Head of Legal and Secretarial Services, the job holder will act as legal business partner to the Technology Division. 

He or she will; provide legal advisory support to the Procurement, Supply Chain & Finance Department during procurement or sourcing of materials and services on behalf of the Technology Division. 

They will also advice on any intellectual property related issues and other skilled and professional legal advice as may be required.

Key Responsibilities;
  • Ensure all contracts are drafted, reviewed, varied or completed within the Company’s ISO standards and in accordance with the department’s Service Level Agreement (SLA);
  • Provide timely and business-conscious advice including advice on intellectual property related issues as and when required;
  • Provide legal advisory support to the Procurement, Supply Chain & Finance Department during procurement or sourcing of materials and services on behalf of the Technology Department;
  • Update existing contract templates in line with changing or evolving company policies or regulatory environment;
  • Keep a record of all instructions received by or assigned to the Legal Counsel and the status of each of these instructions;
  • Conduct regular meetings with concerned parties in Technology, Procurement & Supply Chain Department and the Project Management Office to discuss progress of matters as well as any other pertinent issues;
  • Work with Procurement, Supply Chain and Project Management Office in developing efficient and sustainable contracting practices;
  • Consult with the Risk Department & Business Planning Department as well as the Project Management Office in any matters which in the opinion of the Legal Counsel require to be brought to the attention of the Risk Department & Business Planning Department;
  • Work with the Legal Counsel (Litigation Management) in ensuring that litigation management is performed diligently for tasks for suits arising from the Technology portfolio including facilitation & coordination of court attendances by Safaricom staff for legal matters relating to the company;
  • Manage the external counsel portfolio to ensure quality standards are consistently maintained and the agreed fees structure is followed. 
Minimum requirements;
  • Degree in Law from a reputable commonwealth university with minimum 2nd class honors (or equivalent) and completion of Diploma of the Kenya School of Law;
  • Advocate of the high court of Kenya of at least 5 years standing;
  • Other post graduate diplomas or certificate courses suitable for the role in legal matters such as Intellectual Property,  E-commerce, arbitration/mediation & negotiation skills, AML, IP, Legislative Processes/Drafting, etc;
  • 3 years practical demonstrable experience in commercial law, company law, and financial services law;
  • Excellent working knowledge of telecommunications and IT legal and regulatory environment, e-commerce/m-commerce;
  • Good knowledge of civil and criminal procedure codes;
  • Experience in engaging regulatory bodies preferred;
  • 1 year of process and people management experience.
