About VSF Germany
VSF Germany is an international Non Governmental Organization, providing humanitarian aid and development assistance to pastoralists and vulnerable communities in areas where livestock is of importance.  In the region, VSF Germany implements activities in southern Sudan, Northern Sudan, Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.
With support in animal health, agriculture, marketing, food safety, drought responses and mitigation, but also developing the capacity of communities and governmental institutions or initiating peace and conflict resolution we work towards food security and strengthened livelihoods of pastoralist communities.
VSF Germany seeks to recruit a qualified water engineer to support the water facility project in Northern Kenya.
Position and Project: The Water Engineer is a key position which is responsible for all the technical aspects of the WASH program in the water facility project.
The project targets communities in North Horr, Chalbi and Loiyengalani.  Working with Solidarities International the lead agency and PISP Local NGO in the implementation of the project the overall objective of the action is to contribute to the achievement of the MDG related to water, sanitation and hygiene within the project area with an aim to improve the health status of the target population.

Key Responsibilities
  • Spear-head technical implementation of WASH activities, including construction of shallow wells with water lifting device and sand dams; construction of school latrines (including hand washing facilities and construction of rain water collecting systems.
  • Take lead in the preparation/revision of bill of quantities (BOQs) for all the WASH constructions activities.
  • Supervise and ensure technical quality in construction/rehabilitation of all water and sanitation structures, ensuring good maintenance and sustainable processes are put in place.
  • Monitor and ensure proper use of materials in the field in line with Bill of quantities and project designs.
  • Support development of staff and community capacity building in water supply, operations, maintenance and management.
  • Appropriately involve and maintain good relationship with the beneficiaries and local communities at all phases of the projects.
  • Mobilization of the communities, as appropriate, for participation in planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of WASH facilities and services.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
  • BSc. Degree in Water or Civil Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 3 years experience
  • Experience in construction of shallow wells and sand wells.
  • Working experience with pastoral communities an added advantage
  • Experience working in ASAL areas an added advantage
  • Experience working in a humanitarian or other international NGO
  • Knowledge of European Commission  rules and regulations will be an added advantage
  • Strong cross-cultural skills and experience
  • A team player with good organizational and interpersonal skills
