Save the Children Latest Jobs in Kenya November 2011


Save the Children is the world’s leading independent child rights organisation.

We’re outraged that millions of children are still denied proper healthcare, food, education and protection and we’re determined to change this.

We are seeking to fill the following positions, all offered as one (1) year contract with possibility of extension if additional funding is secured:

1. Monitoring & Evaluation Advisor

1 position

based in Nairobi with field travel

Job purpose

The incumbent will assume overall responsibility for strategy, policy and practice in close co-operation with the Programme Quality Director, Thematic Advisors, Area Managers, Programme Staff and Partners while ensuring enhancement of programme quality and promotion of innovation through developing and improving monitoring, evaluation, impact assessment and learning methodologies; capacity building of programme staff and partners, technical advice and knowledge sharing; and identifying potential new programme areas.

S/He will also be responsible for bringing together programme learning, research-based evidence and information, and effective impact monitoring to significantly contribute to organisational learning which will contribute to the delivery of an effective Monitoring & Evaluation function which will play a key role in the expansion of Save the Children programmes in Kenya to increase impact and enable positive change for children.

Person Specification:

A Masters degree in Population studies, Statistics, Social sciences, Social work, Project Management or Development studies with minimum five years practical experience in the establishment, successful implementation and management of M&E systems in large INGO or other international relief/development body.

Evidenced ability to support, train and mentor staff and partners on M&E methodology, facilitate learning-oriented analysis sessions of M&E data, and analyse and disseminate complex information with and to a range of stakeholder audiences and practical knowledge of current thematic issues and debates in developing countries, and of the major institutional donors such as ECHO, DFID and USAID.

2. Administration Manager

1 Position

Based in Nairobi with field travel

Job purpose

The incumbent will oversee the Kenya Programme Office Administration functions and ensure delivery of quality administrative support services.

S/He will also be responsible for the planning, managing and monitoring the Nairobi office budget and to regularly review office expenditure in accountable, efficient and effective way for key services in administration and provide technical support to field offices.

Person Specification:

A first degree in business administration or social sciences with minimum of 3 years administrative experience at a senior within a reputable international organisation and good communication, interpersonal, organisational and analytical skills.

Ability to cope with varying workloads and interruptions and to organize activities to provide efficient services.

3. Program Team Leader

1 Position

Based in Dadaab

Job purpose

She/he will take the lead and meet Save the Children Kenya Programme standards through provision of technical advice and managerial support in coordination, monitoring, reporting and participating in day to day aspects of Save the Children program delivery systems in Dadaab field office.

The incumbent will also provide a common framework to programme staff by ensuring that good M&E principles, practices and culture are fostered in Save the Children UK Kenya programmes that will lead to the attainment and surpassing of country office minimum quality standards for programme development and management.

Person Specification:

A Masters degree in Social science, development studies or Programme Planning and management with over 5 years of continuous relevant experience in Project cycle management or Monitoring and Evaluation implementation of Child Protection, Livelihoods and Education Programmes and working with refugee communities with a reputable INGO at senior management level.

Experience in assessment methodologies (PRA/PLA, RRA), organizing and implementation of integrated projects and proven experience in data interpretation of integrated projects is a must.

4. Support Services Manager

1 Position

Based in Dadaab

Job Purpose

The incumbent will report to the Area Manager and will be responsible for overall management and co-ordination of the Finance; HR and Logistics functions in the field office including capacity building the teams.

S/He will review and revise budgets; authorising and monitoring expenditure in line with the budget and donor guidelines, SCUK grant management and financial guidelines and will also be responsible for effective financial and risk management, compliance, asset management and financial accountability in the programme.

Person specification:

A first degree in business administration or social sciences with minimum of 5 years senior management experience in support services or operations preferably within the INGO sector and possess proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, Good analytical skills with the ability to identify key points from complex material or information.

Assertive and pro-active, with the ability to work on own initiative with little supervision and relevant expertise in design and implementation of systems and maximizing use of resources.

Ability to forge effective working relationships, proven team and people management experience and proven analytical and strategic planning skills are key competencies to be considered.

5. Camp Manager

3 Position

Based in Dadaab

Job Purpose

Under the supervision of the Area Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for implementing a transparent system of management within the camp and ensures the proper coordination of operations and programme activities through provision of services at camp level.

He/she will supervise two Coordinators who will ensure proper communication and collaboration with the camp residents and will represent Save the Children UK at various forums at camp level.

Person specification:

A bachelors degree in business management, public administration, operations, international development, or related field; Graduate degree preferred with minimum 2 years experience in a program management position in a developing country or post conflict setting, with minimum of 3 years of staff management experience in administration, finance, and logistics.

Valuable and varied experience in managing multisectoral programs in a context of relief or recovery, excellent administrative, Budget and financial control/management, communications, and decision-making skills.

Experience liaising with local officials, local NGO agencies and donor representatives.

6. Safety and Security Coordinator

1 Position

Based in Dadaab

Job purpose

The incumbent will report to the Area Manager and work closely with the Safety and Security Manager, and field-based Program Managers to ensure that all Save the Children programme activities in Dadaab are assessed and monitored relative to their impact on staff safety and security, and make recommendations on protocols and practices to reduce staff risk and vulnerability of staff and organisation resources.

S/He will review Dadaab security policies and procedures as needed by analysing security-related information from a variety of local and international media sources/ bodies other INGOs for security updates, reporting, documentation and put in place contingency plans for Evacuation, Relocation, Hibernation, and Medical Evacuation.

He/she will also build the capacity of international and national staff to manage their personal safety and security and resources to ensure the Country’s Minimum Standards in Safety and Security are followed and respected.

Person specification:

A bachelors degree in business with a formal security qualification or advanced security management training and substantial practical field experience in security management in a leadership role (e.g. direct INGO security management) and must have attained the rank of Police inspector or Captain in the Kenya Army with extensive experience of incident reporting, incident mapping, intelligence collation and analysis functions, set up and execution of an incident warning system (warden system), compilation of security reports and assessments; Instructor level experience in the training of security/safety related subjects and technical competency in field based communications systems, Internet and Microsoft Office suite and other database/mapping systems.

Effective people management skills, Strong report writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of Somali and/or Borana is an added advantage.

7. Liaison Officer

1 position

Based in Dadaab

Job Purpose

The incumbent will ensure community engagement and work towards improving relations and ways of working between Save the Children, the Host Community, other Agencies and the Refugee Community.

He/she will act as a focal point in liaising with local authorities as well as being an independent source of information for Save the Children, with regard to community needs, by identifying, assessing and recommending appropriate approaches to community mobilization, Monitor effectiveness and impact of community mobilisation.

S/He will set objectives/indicators together with the Area Manager and record progress. As well as explore all links with individual members of the community and develop their engagement and ownership of the Save the Children Dadaab program, and Compile and submit progress reports to the line manager as required

Person Specifications:
  • A holder of KCSE Certificate with a Diploma in Social Work/ Public relations with 3 years relevant experience in liaison work preferably in a refugee setup, experience of and commitment to utilizing participatory approaches and ability to work in teams and with rural communities.
  • Good communication skills with fluency in Somali and spoken English & Kiswahili, can work under pressure and meet strict deadlines with minimum supervision and experience in working in a program involving children will be an added advantage.
