The Resettlement Support Center (RSC) Africa operates a US refugee resettlement program in sub-Saharan Africa through a Cooperative Agreement with the Department of State/Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration. 

RSC Africa is responsible for the preparation of refugee case files for adjudication by Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) officers, as well as the out-processing and cultural orientation of all approved cases.

 RSC Africa is administered by the Church World Service International Refugee Program (CWS/IRP) and is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
 
RSC Africa seeks qualified applicants for the Temporary Accountant position. 

This temporary contract is expected to be for a duration of 5 to 6 months.
 
Position Description:
 
This position is responsible for the daily expenditure management and maintenance of the RSC Africa financial records, in accordance with the guidelines of DOS/PRM and RSC Africa policies and procedures. 

The position also acts as a back up to the Senior Accountant.
 
The position is supervised by the Financial Controller and works closely with the Deputy Director for Administration, General Services staff and other staff in the Administration and Operations Departments.
 
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Administers, disburses and replenishes the Shilling and Dollar petty cash funds.
  • Does data entry of check and petty cash payments into Microsoft Dynamics GP accounting system.
  • Does data entry into the accounts receivable module and distributes quarterly debtors’ statements to staff.
  • Prepares and organizes relevant documents and reports for the annual audit, responding to auditors’ queries and providing audit schedules and analyses as requested.
  • Receives refunds of unused travel cash advances and any other cash and check refunds, issues a receipt for any refund received and ensures regular and timely banking of all refunds received.
  • Monitors bank balances and funds transfers from CWS Headquarters office and disseminates this information to management on a current basis.
  • Performs monthly stock-take of Inventory and prepares/submits a report on variances to the Deputy Director Administration for follow up.
  • Assists in budget preparation by providing necessary data as requested.
  • Follows sound accounting procedures and practices in conformity with GAAP, IAS and OMB circulars to ensure accuracy and transparency on the use of US Government’s funds.
  • Reviews purchase requests before they are turned into purchase orders
  • Filing and retrieval of financial documents
  • Undertakes all duties as may be assigned by supervisors in order to improve on internal controls and financial operations for the overall achievement of RSC Africa’s goals and objectives.
Position Requirements:
  • Either Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting option or CPA Part II Pass with 2 year’s relevant experience; or CPA I with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in the Non-Governmental sector.
  • Knowledge and experience in using Excel spreadsheets and Microsoft Dynamics-GP or similar accounting software
  • Knowledgeable in fund and accrual accounting principles
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of accounts and budget information
  • Ability to work as a member of a team in a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to overall operations at management level
  • Ability to manage a large and diverse workload under pressure with competing priorities
  • Ability to maintain a high performance standard with attention to details
  • Ability to follow instructions from the Supervisor with a positive and receptive attitude
  • Ability to conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner to represent the best interests of the RSC Africa and CWS/IRP
  • Ability to contribute to the US Government Operational Refugee Processing Program in Africa
