Position Summary:
 
This position is part of the Resilience and Economic Growth in Arid Lands-Improving Resilience (REGAL-IR) project, and is based in Isiolo with frequent travel to other counties in Northern Kenya. REGAL-IR is a five year program sponsored by USAID as part of their Feed the Future strategy for Kenya. 
The program aims to reduce hunger and poverty, increase social stability and build strong foundations for economic growth amongst pastoralists and transitioning pastoralists in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). 
REGAL-IR is designed to empower communities to take charge of their development and to strengthen their capacity to select, design, implement and monitor activities focused on increasing their social, economic, and environmental resilience to natural and human-induced shocks.

Pending the outcome of an intensive community engagement process - Participatory Learning, Planning and Action (PLPA) - REGAL-IR anticipates facilitating activities in six or more thematic areas including diversifying livelihoods, improving value chain inclusiveness, natural resource management, conflict management and mitigation, disaster risk reduction and improving nutrition.
 
The program will be based in Isiolo town and implemented in Isiolo, Garissa, Wajir, Marsabit, and Turkana counties.
 
Position Purpose:
  • To help achieve REGAL-IR goals and objectives through capacity-building including the design, implementation and coordination of training designs, modules, workshops, and coaching and mentoring programs for members of targeted project communities and institutions.
  • A key objective of the training component is to equip targeted members and institutions within project communities and Government of Kenya (GoK) officials at the county and sub-county levels with the skills they need to own, lead and drive resilience-focused development.
  • The Capacity-Building/Training Coordinator (TC) will work closely with the REGAL-IR core team and consortium partners to play a leading role in capacity development and training of internal and external partners.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Working together with the REGAL-IR Leadership Team and project stakeholders, develop needs-based capacity-building strategies that are tailored to targeted individuals, organizations and institutions within project communities and counties, GoK and REGAL-IR partners, that furthers resilience goals and objectives;
  • In cooperation with REGAL-IR Technical Advisors and other technical experts, design and deliver training concepts, modules, methods and material utilizing appropriate adult learning principles and training methodologies that effectively develop AKSP (attitude, knowledge, skills and practices) of learners, including components that:
  1. Prepare trainers to train learners with no prior experience in formal education;
  2. Train Trainers (TOT);
  3. Recognize low levels of literacy and English language;
  4. Favour disadvantaged and marginalized learners.
  • In cooperation with REGAL-IR Technical Advisors and other technical experts, design and oversee coaching and mentorship programs targeting community and county members in project areas as well as REGAL-IR partners;
  • Coordinate with team members to track, evaluate and report on the progress of individuals and organizations benefiting from project skills transfer, training and capacity-building.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Five or more years of professional training experience;
  • Formal certification or degree qualification in a relevant vocation and/or teaching/training certification (desirable);
  • Background in applied experiential knowledge techniques and practices including familiarity with the standard three volume work Training for Transformation;
  • Knowledge of and experience using participatory training methods and Training of Trainers (TOT);
  • Designed and delivered basic management training modules (project/proposal design, organizational development, communications, supervision);
  • Sectoral strength in community development, small business enterprise, environment, or governance;
  • Experience as a facilitator for strategic planning exercises;
  • Ability to design customized exercises for skills building;
  • Experience working with local communities, preferably in ASAL regions;
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to motivate and communicate cross-culturally;
  • Fluent in English and Swahili;
  • Knowledge of USAID rules and regulations.
