Handicap International Child Protection Project Manager Job in Kitale, Kenya

The Organization

Handicap International (HI) is an INGO specialising in the field of disability and development. A strong emphasis is placed on empowering people with disabilities through their integration into mainstream development activities and the provision of appropriate health and rehabilitation services to ensure equal opportunities for all.

The Project

From the 1st of November, HI has launched the Ubuntu care project with the ultimate goal to end violence against children through social cohesion. 

This multi- countries project (Burundi, Rwanda,
Kenya) aims to address the root causes and to mitigate the consequences of violence against children, especially those with disabilities. 

The strategy is to translate effectively the international commitments in regard of children’s rights, in particular the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) into practical actions on the ground through improved response mechanisms to Sexual and gender based violence against children at all levels. 

This project will engage with children and empower them as key stakeholders in their own protection, through a Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) approach. 

This involves empowering children, their families and community regardless of gender, or type of disability, through: raising awareness, promoting inclusion, skills development, eliminating stigma, and facilitating access to health, education and legal opportunities.

The Project Manager will be in charge of the implementation of the Kenyan part of the project.

He/she is responsible for:-

1. Overall management of the project by
  • Being in charge of the implementation of the project following the project cycle management steps in close collaboration with the partners, the local authorities and Government of Kenya line Ministries.
  • Developing project annual plan and monitoring the indicators according to the monitoring tools in collaboration with the coordinators (technical and operational).
  • Co-ordinating technical support to the local partners by ensuring adherence to partnership agreements.
  • Representing HI and the child protection (Ubuntu care) project in meetings, conferences and seminars and sharing feedback to benefit the project.
2. Establishing and maintaining linkages with partners by
  • Developing partnerships with different public or private local partners
  • Liaising with technical advisors in the development of terms of references and project documents
  • Communicating on the project activities with all partners and HI staff through internal communication tools and through the project steering committee.
3. Supervision of financial, logistic and material resources of the project implementation by
  • Developing and managing the annual budget plan and monitoring the project related expenses.
  • Preparing the cashflow forecast/requests for submission to the Field Administrator/ Finance team
  • Participating in the logistical management of the project in conjunction with the logistics team.
4. Team management of the project staff by
  • Supervising and leading the project team, validating individual action plan, carrying out assessments/appraisals
  • Overseeing the team’s career development, defining training needs and providing guidance on professional development
  • Participating in the recruitment of new team members according to the need
5. Contributing towards the capitalization of experience by
  • Identifying issues or subjects for capitalization in collaboration with the technical advisors and coordinators
  • Collecting necessary data using criteria and indicators established by the project
  • Participating in analyzing the collected data
6. Ensuring adherence to HI standards and values for quality assurance by
  • Developing the project framework in line with HI strategy with validation of technical advisors and
  • Field Coordinator
  • Collecting and formalizing tools and methods developed within the project framework for sharing with project partners
  • Identifying links and exchange of skills and resources amongst projects internal and external actors
Qualifications and skills

Required  

Education :  
  • At least a masters degree in the development, or project management, social science sector
Experience
  • At least 5 years as a project manager for an international humanitarian NGO
Skills and Competences :
  • Excellent team management skills (supervision, support, conflict management, etc.).
  • Excellent skills in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of disability and community approach to child protection
Personal Attributes:
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Good ability to adapt to changing circumstances
  • Proactive
Desirable

Education : 
  • A masters degree in social sciences, gender/ disability and development, or social development
Experience
  • Experience in project management in psychosocial and/or child protection.
Skills and Competences :
  • Competence as an administrative and financial manager
  • Knowledge of the policies and legalities surrounding sexual violence and exploitation
