The Kenya Bureau of standards (KEBS) is a statutory organization of the Government of Kenya established by the Standards Act, Cap 496 of the laws of Kenya in July 1974. 

The mandate of KEBS is to provide Standardization, Metrology and Conformity Assessment services through Promotion of standardization in commerce and industry, Provision of testing and calibration facilities, Control of the use of standardization marks, undertaking educational work in  standardization, Facilitation of the implementation and practical application of standards,   Maintenance and dissemination of the International System of Units (SI) of measurements.

Assistant Laboratory Technician (Analytical Chemist)

2 Position

Reporting to: Laboratory Manager
 

Job Role
 

Receiving, Handling and Testing of Samples in the food and agriculture laboratory in line with TES Quality Policy and ISO/IEC17025 Specification

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform tests on a variety of samples using standard operating procedures and methods.
• Verifying, receiving and proper storage of all incoming samples from Sample Control Centre.
• Carrying out preparation of samples and reagents as defined in the approved analytical procedure.
• Operate, adjust and maintain equipment as defined by the manufacturer and the equipment work instruction.
• Ensuring timely entry and validation of test Results entry in to the LIMS
• Take Custody of the samples allocated through the analytical process.
• Maintain integrity and confidentiality of testing records (e.g. protocols, equipment setups and monitoring, and experimental results).
• Ensure proper use and management of laboratory equipment during analytical process (routine maintenance, reporting of fault and request for calibration).
• Monitoring of chemical, reagent and other materials re-order levels and initiating requisitions of the same.
• Participating in validation of new /revised test methods.
• Conduct in-house training for new staff on first appointment and students on attachment.
• Implement Testing health and safety policies and ensure good house keeping
• Implementing the laboratory Quality Management System as documented.

Other Duties:

• Participate in internal audits and management review as required by the laboratory Quality management system.
• Disposal / return of tested samples to sample control centre.
• Participating in technical committees when called upon
• Providing expert testimony to the legal department in court cases involving testing issues when called upon
• Managing training tours/visits into the laboratory

Public Health / Environmental Science

1 Position

Reporting to: Manager, Training and Advisory Services
 

Job Role

• Implement training programs

Key Responsibilities:

• Conducting training;
• Scheduling the  pool of trainers to conduct training;
• Participate in Planning Training work for the year;
• Assist Manager Training and Advisory Services in organizing for resources to implement training programs;

Assistant Metrology Officer (Physicist)

1 Position

Reporting to: Manager, Head of a Section
 

Job Role
 

To maintain and disseminate the units of measurement so as to provide national traceability of measurements to the International System of Units (SI) in line with the corporate vision and mission.

Key Responsibilities:

• Maintain the laboratory measurement standards and  equipment in accordance with the established maintenance schedule;
• Carrying out day to day calibrations of the laboratory and prepare certificates/reports;
• Assist in maintaining custody of the National Measurement Standards;
• Assist in maintaining the traceability of the National Measurement Standards to the International System of Units (SI).
• Implement and maintain the  laboratory quality management system (QMS);
• Assist in achieving and maintaining accreditation status of the laboratory;
• Assist in the programme of attaining  international recognition of the national measurement standards, and the Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs) of the laboratory under the framework of the Mutual Recognition Arrangement of the International Committee of Weights & Measures (CIPM MRA);
• Implement   the specific laboratory aspects of the strategic plan;

Job Role
 

Planning and coordinating standardization activities within Specific fields in line with KEBS Strategic plan and the performance contract for the Division

Key Responsibilities:

• Ensure development and maintenance of Kenya standards and other deliverables such as Publicly Available Specifications(PAS), Technical Reports(TR), Company standards and National workshop agreements(NWA), based on market/customer needs within Specific fields.
• Conducts need assessment for standards within Specific fields.
• Supervision of technical work of specific Technical Committees (TC’s), their sub-committees and working groups.
• Serve as TC Secretary and convene TC/SC meetings.
• Constitution and maintenance of specific technical committees.
• Co-ordination between specific TC’s/SC’s/WG’s and resolving co-ordination issues.
• Participate in the standardization activities of other standards bodies e.g. ISO, ARSO etc with a view to gathering data which can assist in preparing standards which are internationally acceptable.
• Prepare and implement Work plan and work programs.
• Evaluating the conformity of the technical work programme of the specific technical committees to their strategic policy statements, established priorities and monitoring target dates for the various stages of development of documents and taking appropriate action.
• Undertaking corrective/preventive actions for maintenance of the quality management system.
• Assisting in handling technical enquiries and complaints from internal and external customers.
• Assists in preparation and implementation of budgets.

Assistant Surveillance Officer (Civil/Food/Mechanical) 

3 Position

Reporting to: Chief Manager, Surveillance
 

Job Role
 

To undertake market surveillance and ensure compliance for both local and imported products in the Kenyan market.

Key  Responsibilities:

• Implement developed strategies to ensure compliance of civil/food/mechanical products in the market.
• Conducting raids on substandard and counterfeits products as necessary and any other action that may deter trade in such products.
• Gather and evaluate market intelligence with regard to substandard   civil/food/mechanical products.
• Liaise with other stakeholders in the various sectors in the fight against substandard commodities.

Job Role
 

Carrying out the implementation and enforcement of Kenya Standards and certification of products, in line with the laid down procedures and electrical/electronic standards

Key Responsibilities:

• Facilitating implementation of Kenya Standards and other approved specifications in the industry, in the relevant field.
• Receiving, analyzing laboratory test reports and giving feedback to the client
• Implementing KEBS mandatory Standardization Mark Scheme.
• Implementing KEBS voluntary Diamond Mark Scheme.
• Participating in prosecution of the various parties contravening the Standards Act.
• Receiving, investigating and resolving consumer related product complaints.
• Providing consultancy services on product and process quality to industry and other stakeholders.

Job Role

• Carrying out quality inspection of goods as per laid down procedures and guidelines

Key Responsibilities:

• Carrying out quality inspection of goods.

• Draw and submit samples for laboratory analysis.

Job Role
