Role Purpose: YouthSave is a multi-year project to develop and test the development and commercial impacts of youth savings accounts (YSAs) in 4 countries.  

The project will represent the largest initiative to date to study youth demand for savings facilities in developing countries, and to satisfy that demand by developing commercially viable savings services in conjunction with local financial institutions (FIs). 

YouthSave also includes a significant research component, which in Kenya will focus on monitoring uptake and usage of accounts.
The YouthSave Data Intern is responsible for inputting data correctly in the Financial Capability (FC) database and ensuring that data is of a high quality by counterchecking source documents with the data authors. This will involve making phone call follow up and possibly site visits.

Dimensions: Save the Children has been operational in Kenya since the 1950s, providing support to children through developmental and humanitarian relief programmes delivered both directly and through local partners. 

Current programming focuses on child protection, child rights governance, education, health, HIV/AIDS, livelihoods, nutrition and WASH. 

In 2012, as part of a global reorganization process, Save the Children combined the programmes of SC UK, SC Canada and SC Finland to create a single operation in Kenya. 

By Feb 2013, we will have completed a second transition, which will see us join forces with the British INGO, Merlin, and merge their health and nutrition programmes with our own. 

Save the Children has an operational presence in Dadaab Refugee Camp, Garissa, Mandera, Meru and Wajir – with plans to expand into Bungoma and Turkana in 2014. We work through partners in many other parts of the country. 

By February 2014, we will have a staff complement of around 300 staff and an operating annual budget of approximately US$25 million.

Key Areas of Accountability:
  • Entering all YouthSave Programme Financial Capability data information is accurately and completely in the FC database. These are:  pre-test, post-test, post post-test questionnaires, youth and adult registers, Qualitative Club Forms and buy-in session forms
  • With support from the YouthSave Programme Assistant, ensuring that data information received is complete for capture.
  • Making follow up calls to data authors both in the Save the Children office and to partners in the field to clarify data information, ensure accuracy and provide feedback to the data authors.
  • Ensuring data integrity is maintained and confidentiality kept at all times. 
  • Where possible and necessary, support the YouthSave Programme Assistant in building the data collection and documentation skills of partners and field implementers.
  • Assist in the filing and storage of hard copy records in an orderly manner as directed by the YouthSave Programme Assistant.
  • Support the YouthSave Program Assistant in tracking overall numbers of records entered by preparing a weekly tally of records entered per partner for her review.
  • Provide feedback or suggestions to the YouthSave Programme Coordinator  and Assistant on the data entry process particularly pointing out any recommendations in areas of growth in the process.
  • Any other relevant duties as may have been assigned by their Supervisor.

Major Responsibilities

  • Assisting the GIS officer in development of databases and data collection tools for a variety of purposes.
  • Assist in collection, evaluation and dissemination of programmatic information on a regular basis for analysis and reporting purposes.
  • Assist in planning, organizing and servicing conferences, seminars and training workshops- preparing presentations and facilitating ICT needs as required.

  • Format and proofread sub-recipient quarterly and bi-annual narrative reports and consolidated SomReP reports to donors.
  • Assisting in preparing monthly and quarterly M&E reports in time for team reflection meetings
Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences/Communications/Accounting/ Commerce/Finance /Economics/Statistics/Administration or other areas of study.

The main duties for this position include the following:

Project Implementation, Coordination and Reporting

  • Coordinate and monitor the execution of the day to day processes and activities of the project.
  • Assist the project manager, Chief Technical Advisor and counterparts to establish and operate the project.
  • Establish and maintain the required relations and exchange of information with the local authorities, private sector institutions, enterprises, support institutions and other development partners.
  • Prepare and monitor the implementation of work/action! upgrading plans. 
  • Participate in the Mid Term Review and provide inputs for final evaluation of the project.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 3 years experience in the related fields: Trade Capacity Building; International Business Administration, Food Safety / Food Processing, Quality Management.
  • University degree, preferably in economics, business administration or engineering (agriculture, food processing, trade capacity building or another relevant discipline);
  • Good practical experience in project coordination in the areas such as trade, food safety, quality management

Purpose of the Position: Under the supervision of the Senior Social Policy Specialist, you will ensure that the UNICEF Country Office has useful, valid and reliable information on:
  • the situation of children's and women's rights;

1. 2. Situation Monitoring and Assessment: Ensure that the Country Office and national partners have timely and accurate measurement of change in conditions in the country or region, including monitoring of socio-economic trends and the country's wider policy, economic or institutional context, to facilitate planning and to draw conclusions about the impact of programmes or policies.

3. M&E Capacity Building: Ensure that the monitoring and evaluation capacities of Country Office staff and national partners - government and civil society - are strengthened enabling them to increasingly engage in and lead monitoring and evaluation processes.

4. Evaluation: Ensure that UNICEF-supported evaluations are designed and implemented to established UN quality standards, and the results are disseminated in a timely fashion to stakeholders in order to improve programme performance and contribute to wider learning.

5. Programme Performance Monitoring: Ensure that the Country Office has quality information to assess progress towards expected results established in annual work plans.

6. Coordination and Networking: Ensure that the UNICEF office is effectively linked to wider UNICEF M&E developments in a way that both contributes to and benefits from organizational learning on effective M&E management.

Qualifications of Successful Candidate
  • Advanced university degree in Social Sciences, Demography, Development Planning, Statistics or a related technical field.
  • Five years of relevant work experience at national and international levels in programme monitoring and evaluation. Practical experience in community-based research.
  • Fluency in English and another UN language. Knowledge of the local working language of the duty station is an asset.

Monitoring and Evaluation Expert
 
Major Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the design of and assist in managing program assessments and evaluations and promote a culture of evidence-based decision making, and effectively communicating program results to a wide variety of stakeholders;
  • Lead development of and oversee the review of project level Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) plans;
  • Provide M&E technical assistance to research programs such as reviewing M&E methods, carrying out training needs, designing M&E tools, and ensuring quality control of M&E outputs
  • Support the development of M&E frameworks and research plans to guide research and M & E activities;
  • Lead project implementation including data collection, data analysis and report writing, synthesis of knowledge, and monitoring and evaluation of the impact of projects assigned;
  • Lead activities related to knowledge generation and sharing, documentation and dissemination of best practices;
  • Lead in identifying partners to build country and regional capacity in monitoring and evaluation of population and health interventions; and

Qualifications and Experience
  • Master degree (PhD preferred) in public health, statistics, or related field with specializations in health, epidemiology, education, biostatistics, demography, or applied research;
  • A minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience designing and implementing M&E systems for international donor-funded programs (USAID, EU, DFID, etc.) e.g. health programs, in developing countries in general and in sub-Saharan Africa in particular;
  • Experience in: Impact and performance evaluations; Assessments and feasibility studies; Cost effectiveness analysis; Monitoring plans, strategies and indicators; M&E-related policies and programs; Technical training on M&E skills, tools and methods;
  • Proven experience in conducting large, national quantitative data collection at the household and facility levels;
  • Strong writing skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with both funding agencies and with national and local personnel;
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team;
  • Experience in capacity building to undertake measurement and evaluation of research programs in developing countries;
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively (written and oral) with a wide range and level of audience;
  • Strong quantitative skills (managing, analyzing and interpreting data), with extensive familiarity with Statistical Packages (STATA or SPSS);
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft packages (Word, PowerPoint, Excel); and
