USAID TIS Program Grants Intern Job in Kenya

USAID Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) Program: The Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) program is funded by USAID and responds to the complex crisis that has evolved in Somalia. 

The overall program goal is to mitigate conflict; to promote stability and community cohesion, and to strengthen citizens’ relationships with government officials. 

TIS implements quick impact activities linked to longer-term stabilization goals.

The TIS program is currently seeking a skilled, diplomatic, effective, and highly motivated Grants Intern to join our Nairobi based grants team.

Qualifications and skills sought:
  • Student with degree in either Accounting, Commerce, Financial Management, Political Science, International Relations, International Development or appropriate field.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow procedures and meet deadlines.
  • 2 – 3 months internship experience preferably with International NGO is highly desirable.
  • Work independently and cooperatively with team members.
  • Excellent computer skills (Outlook express, MS Office, emails).
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to multi-task and self-manage
  • Ability to work with multi-ethnic team in a culturally appropriate manner
  • Must have a good command of English in both oral and writing skills. Somali speaking is an asset.
  • Be able to interact with partners and peers.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and work with teams based in Nairobi and field sites.

Land O’Lakes International Development Kenyan Jobs 2013

Land O’Lakes International Development has recently been awarded three year USDA-funded Kenya Semi-Arid Livestock Enhancement Support (K-SALES) project that will support the increased productivity, and boost marketing and trade of livestock products to the market. 

We seek local Kenyan candidates for all positions.

All positions will be required to travel more than 60% of the time to rural areas. 

Candidates interested in these positions must be willing to travel throughout Kenya.
 

Deputy Chief of Party
  • 10 years of progressively responsible work experience in operational support, procurement, grants management, personnel management, and finance/budget oversight of USAID/USDA funded development programs; 
  • MBA or Master’s degree in finance, economics or a related field;
Market Development Manager
  • 5 years of experience in agricultural marketing and market development; 
  • 7 years’ of experience conducting feasibility, business or financial analysis for private-sector firms in the agricultural sector. 
  • Must have experience in capacity building. 
  • Master’s degree in marketing or a related field;
Livestock Processing Advisor 
  • 5 or more years of experience in livestock sector development—with at least 3 years specific to meat processing; 
  • Prior work experience at Private-sector operators in feedlot management, meat processing, slaughterhouses/abattoirs, cold chain processing, packaging, and/or livestock marketing; 
  • S/he must be knowledgeable in Government of Kenya rules and regulations regarding meat hygiene and phyto-sanitary standards and processes. 
  • Must have experience in capacity building. Master’s degree or Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, Animal husbandry (BVS, BVSc, BVetMed, DVM, VMD, etc.);
Livestock Production Advisors 
  • 5 or more years of experience in livestock value chain focused on improved production, producer organization, improved feeding practices and/or herd management.
  • Must be able to identify the needs and challenges of smallholder livestock farmers and identify ways of improving their productivity; 
  • Must have experience in capacity building. Master’s degree or Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, Animal husbandry (BVS, BVSc, BVetMed, DVM, VMD, etc.);
Livestock Production Specialist 
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working directly with farmers including designing, conducting and evaluating training programs, developing lead farmers and/or farmer/pastoralist field schools. 
  • Must have experience in capacity building. 
  • Must be eager to work in village locations; 
  • Eight-five percent of time will be spent outside of the office. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a related field; 
Water & Infrastructure Development Advisor 
  • 3 years’ experience working directly with farmers including designing, conducting and evaluating training programs and developing lead farmers. 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in rural water infrastructure and/or 3 years of agriculture related infrastructure (abattoirs, markets, feed mills, etc.), especially in the private sector. 
  • Must have experience in capacity building. 
  • A bachelors’ degree in agricultural engineering or a related field;
Monitoring & Evaluation Manager
  • 5 years of experience managing/implementing M&E systems or research; 
  • A robust and diverse set of research skills, including qualitative (interviews, focus groups, and observation) quantitative (descriptive and inferential statistics), action research and participatory methods. 
  • A Master’s degree in public policy, statistics or a related field;
Communications Assistant 
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or in a related field and 3 years of relevant experience, preferably with an international development organization; 
  • Must have at least two years of experience working in on USDA or USAID projects, with a demonstrated understanding of branding rules and regulations;
Grants Manager
  • 5 years of work experience in USAID/USDA funded grants oversight; 
  • Previous experience working with grants for project of similar size ($15 million and up); 
  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance or similar required;
Grants Assistant 
  • 3 years of work experience in USAID/USDA funded grants oversight; 
  • Previous experience working with grants for project of similar size ($15 million and up); 
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or similar required;
Office Manager 
  • Bachelor degree in business, administration or communications; 
  • Good computer skills and Microsoft Office; 
  • Related experience of office and admin assistant of at least two years in USDA or USAID projects; 
  • Good communication skills.

IOM Field Grants Administrative Assistant Job in Mogadishu, Somalia

Closing Date: 3rd July 2013.

General function:

Under the overall supervision of USAID Transition Initiatives for Somalia (TIS) Program Manager and the direct supervision of the Field Coordinator, in coordination with the Grants Manager, or his/her designee, the incumbent will assist in administration of grants by ensuring proper filing of grants related financial, contract and grantee documents in the field.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain secure hard copy files for every ongoing activity in the field, to immediately send scanned copies of all relevant documents and hard copy files when safe to the headquarters-based Grants Unit.
  • Assist Field Team members in preparing necessary grant documentation, including but not limited to, Site Visit Notes, before, during and after Photos, systematic reporting, and needed Grant Amendments.
  • Assist in the compilation of data from the field for preparation of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Review all grantee deliverables and invoices to ensure compliance against contract/agreement and grant budget prior to sharing with headquarters for payment processing.
  • Follow up with TIS Headquarters’ Finance Unit to ensure payments are being processed in a timely fashion after sharing supporting documentation.
  • Manage the office supplies, maintaining a Log Book of materials and use.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Personal Development:

The incumbent will perform a variety of duties often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure. He/she will accept responsibility for monitoring in full of an activity’s grant documentation.

Required Qualifications:

The minimum required academic and professional skills for the jobholder to perform successfully in their job include:
  • University Degree in Mathematics, Business Administration, Finance or Business related field,
  • Previous work experience in Grants or Finance related field especially on USAID funded projects at least 2 years.
  • Willingness to travel extensively within the region, work extended periods in the field and interact effectively with partners.
  • Experience in initiating and encouraging inter-sectorial information sharing and cooperation, while exercising respect for cultural diversity.
  • Ability and willingness to travel at short notice for at least 33% of time.
  •  Highly proficient in Microsoft office (Microsoft Excel, Access, Outlook and Word) and internet applications.
Required Skills and Competencies:
  • Personal commitment, efficiency and results-driven, sound organization skills with strict attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, strong interpersonal, inter-cultural skills and ability to work as part of a diverse team.

Project Summary:
 
The REGAL IR program is a 5 year initiative aiming to reduce hunger and poverty, increase social stability and build strong foundations for economic growth by strengthening social, economic, and environmental resilience in pastoral and transitioning communities in Kenya’s arid lands.
It has six thematic areas including diversifying livelihoods, improving value chain inclusiveness, natural resource management, conflict management, disaster risk reduction, and improving nutrition. 
The main project office is based in Isiolo County. REGAL-IR implements activities in Isiolo, Garissa, Wajir, Marsabit, and Turkana counties.

Position Summary:
 
The Grants Manager (GM) will report to the REGAL-IR Operations Manager and will be responsible for making grants to community-based organizations (CBOs), NGOs and other recipients participating in the REGAL-IR program across five project counties.

The GM will help strengthen the capacity of beneficiaries to receive grants to implement resilience projects and to manage them effectively.
 
The GM will assess potential recipients’ capacity, facilitate the strengthening of grants management capacity, and monitor grants budgeting and reporting per Adeso and USAID guidelines. 
The GM will minimize operational risks and ensure compliance with Adeso’s and USAID’s grant management rules and regulations.
 
Specific Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Under supervision from the Operations Manager and COP, and in cooperation with the Finance and Program Teams, make grants to various community-based organizations (CBOs) and NGOs to assist grant recipients to implement resilience-strengthening projects and to further the objectives of REGAL-IR;
  • Provide technical assistance to CBOs and other recipients to implement and manage the grant cycle/process, including: proposal development and submission, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation, periodic reporting and grants close out;
  • Develop the REGAL-IR Grants Management Manual containing rules and regulations in conformance with Adeso and USAID standards;
  • Maintain a reporting and tracking system to monitor recipients’ grants implementation and compliance with rules, regulations and deadlines;
  • Ensure REGAL-IR staff understand donor guidelines, compliance issues and grants management procedures;
  • Conduct regular visits to field offices and project sites;
  • Supervise the Grants Officer, and coach and mentor grants recipients.
Skills and Qualifications:
 
Essential:
  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Minimum of 5 years grants experience in a professional services firm, international NGO or donor organization;
  • Demonstrated experience managing donor funds and ensuring compliance with donor requirements;
  • Understanding of risks and related relevant controls primarily in the overall grant cycle including program, financial and procurement cycles;
  • High level skills in written standard English and ability to transform documents and reports developed by program staff into dissemination standard documents;
  • Ability to present, discuss and supervise compliance with grants monitoring protocols with team members of varying levels;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective project files for accountability and audit purposes.
Desirable:
  • High level skills in coaching, mentoring, capacity building, team development, around grants management and donor compliance;
  • Evidence of strong team player;
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise others;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships and partnerships;
  • Demonstrated experience to work productively in ASALs environment;
  • CPA or accounting experience.
